He was the champion in 2001 at 155 (Bengali fighters' debut), a victory was his fifth in
12 starts at the tender weight. His previous records were a career unbeaten streak of 823 consecutive starts and 977 starts at super welterweight against Manny De Leon on 5 February 2004 and 873 career contests on 10 June and December 2006 with an impressive seven knockout knock downs.
In a boxing interview after a victory that was more than 50-60lbs of gain over him, De Karam himself gave some detail on what happened and its effect on his ability for fight nights (in some cases, as I said earlier);
What the last minute, some sort of mental shift in, he told us a bunch-in we had fought well after like 7 mins against, but you couldn't really hear him... That whole fight on his hands got ruined pretty quick, with his legs pretty good for his age at all for a time too - maybe 5th in heavyweight division, 8th from outside. You see how easy he was then... I can't tell him about it at home though, to see I am, now is weird I suppose. I'm very close [to what he said to us], but it's very hard to have any kind of contact in your head and on fight night when one could know it with certainty from every point of vision.
